What this calculator models
It models a fixed-rate loan repaid in equal monthly installments, like the standard ten-year federal plan or most private student loans. Income-driven, graduated and extended plans change your payment over time and are not modeled here, so use your servicer’s tools for those.
Interest on unsubsidized and private loans can accrue while you are in school or in deferment and may be added to the balance when repayment starts. If you have that situation, enter the balance you will owe at the start of repayment.
Paying less interest on student loans
Pay interest while in school if you can, target the highest-rate loan with any extra money and confirm extra payments go to principal. Refinancing federal loans into a private loan can lower the rate but forfeits federal protections such as income-driven repayment and forgiveness programs, so weigh that carefully before you refinance.
$35,000 at 6.5% by loan length
Borrowing $35,000 at 6.5% over 10 years costs $397.42 a month and $12,690 in interest, $47,690 in total. Shorter terms raise the payment but cut the interest, and longer terms do the reverse. The table shows the trade-off across common terms.
| Term | Monthly payment | Total interest | Total paid |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12-month | $3,020.37 | $1,244 | $36,244 |
| 2-year | $1,559.12 | $2,419 | $37,419 |
| 3-year | $1,072.72 | $3,618 | $38,618 |
| 4-year | $830.02 | $4,841 | $39,841 |
| 5-year | $684.82 | $6,089 | $41,089 |
| 7-year | $519.73 | $8,657 | $43,657 |
| 10-year | $397.42 | $12,690 | $47,690 |
How your rate changes the cost
Personal loan rates vary widely with credit score, from the mid single digits for strong borrowers to 30% or more for weak credit. On $35,000 over 10 years, moving from 6.5% to 9.5% adds $6,657 in interest.
| APR | Monthly payment | Total interest |
|---|---|---|
| 3.5% | $346.10 | $6,532 |
| 5% | $371.23 | $9,548 |
| 6.5% | $397.42 | $12,690 |
| 8% | $424.65 | $15,957 |
| 9.5% | $452.89 | $19,347 |
How much can you borrow for a given payment?
Working backwards at 6.5% over 10 years, here is the loan size each monthly payment supports.
| Monthly payment | Loan amount |
|---|---|
| $200/month | $17,614 |
| $300/month | $26,421 |
| $400/month | $35,227 |
| $500/month | $44,034 |
When is half of a $35,000 loan repaid?
With a $397.42 payment, the balance falls below half ($17,500) after 70 payments, about 5.8 years into a 10 years loan. Because interest is highest at the start, the second half of the loan is paid down much faster than the first.
| After | Balance left | Paid so far |
|---|---|---|
| 1 year | $32,430 | $4,769 |
| 2 years | $29,689 | $9,538 |
| 3 years | $26,763 | $14,307 |
| 5 years | $20,311 | $23,845 |
| 7 years | $12,966 | $33,383 |
Frequently asked questions
How long is a standard student loan repayment?
The standard federal plan is ten years. Other plans run longer and lower the monthly payment at the cost of more interest.
Should I pay extra on student loans?
If you have no higher-rate debt and have an emergency fund, extra payments toward the highest-rate loan reduce total interest. Check that they go to principal.
How is a loan payment calculated?
The payment is principal × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)^−n), where r is the monthly rate (APR ÷ 12) and n is the number of months. Each payment covers that month’s interest first, and the rest reduces the balance.
What is the difference between interest rate and APR?
The interest rate is the cost of borrowing the money. APR also includes certain fees, so it is the better number for comparing offers. This calculator treats the rate you enter as the rate that accrues on the balance.
