How a trade-in lowers what you borrow
Your trade-in is applied like a down payment, and in most states the sales tax is charged only on the difference between the new car’s price and the trade-in value. A few states do not give that credit, so check your state’s rule. Enter the real trade-in offer, not what you hope to get, and compare it with an instant offer from an online buyer or a private-sale price.
If you owe more than the car is worth
When the loan on your old car is larger than its trade-in value, the shortfall is negative equity. Dealers can roll it into the new loan, but you then borrow more than the new car is worth from day one and pay interest on the old debt. If you can, pay the gap in cash, wait until you owe less, or choose a cheaper car. To model it here, lower the trade-in value by the amount you are underwater.
$33,500 financed: payment by loan length
At 7% APR, financing $33,500 (the $32,000 price plus 6.25% sales tax and $500 in fees minus $1,000 down) costs $663.34 a month over 60 months and $505.60 over 84 months. The longer loan lowers the payment by $157.74 but adds $2,671 in interest. Going the other way, 36 months raises the payment to $1,034.38 and cuts total interest to $3,738.
| Term | Monthly payment | Total interest | Total paid |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3-year | $1,034.38 | $3,738 | $37,238 |
| 4-year | $802.20 | $5,006 | $38,506 |
| 5-year | $663.34 | $6,300 | $39,800 |
| 6-year | $571.14 | $7,622 | $41,122 |
| 7-year | $505.60 | $8,971 | $42,471 |
How the interest rate changes a 5-year loan
On the same $33,500 over 5 years, each full percentage point of APR moves the payment by about $15.92 and total interest by about $955. Rates depend on your credit score, the loan term and whether the car is new or used, so get a pre-approval from a bank or credit union before you walk into a dealership.
| APR | Monthly payment | Total interest | Difference vs 7% |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5% | $632.19 | $4,431 | −$1,869 |
| 6% | $647.65 | $5,359 | −$941 |
| 7% | $663.34 | $6,300 | +$0 |
| 8% | $679.26 | $7,256 | +$955 |
| 9% | $695.40 | $8,224 | +$1,924 |
What a bigger down payment does
A down payment reduces what you finance, which cuts both the payment and the interest, and it protects you from owing more than the car is worth early in the loan, when new cars depreciate fastest. Here is the same $32,000 car at 7% over 5 years with different down payments.
| Down payment | Amount financed | Monthly payment | Total interest |
|---|---|---|---|
| $0 | $34,500 | $683.14 | $6,489 |
| $3,200 (10%) | $31,300 | $619.78 | $5,887 |
| $6,400 (20%) | $28,100 | $556.41 | $5,285 |
Paying extra
Adding $100 a month to this loan would pay it off 9 months sooner and save $990 in interest, as long as your lender applies extra money to principal and charges no prepayment penalty. Ask before you start.
Can you afford a $32,000 car?
A common rule of thumb, the 20/4/10 guideline, suggests 20% down, a term of at most 4 years and total car costs under 10% of gross income. On payment alone, $663.34 a month points to a gross income of roughly $79,600 a year to stay at 10%, before insurance, fuel and maintenance. This loan departs from the guideline because the down payment is 3% rather than 20% and the term of 60 months is longer than 48, so the payment is lower than a stricter plan would give but the loan costs more overall.
Will you owe more than the car is worth?
New cars commonly lose around 20% of their value in the first year and roughly 15% a year after that, though this varies by model. Using that rough rule on a $32,000 car, you would likely owe more than the car is worth until about year 2. Gap insurance can cover the difference if the car is totaled while you are underwater.
| End of | Loan balance | Est. car value | Equity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | $27,701 | $25,600 | −$2,101 |
| Year 2 | $21,483 | $21,760 | +$277 |
| Year 3 | $14,816 | $18,560 | +$3,744 |
| Year 4 | $7,666 | $15,680 | +$8,014 |
| Year 5 | $0 | $13,440 | +$13,440 |
Frequently asked questions
Does a trade-in reduce sales tax?
In most states, yes: tax applies to the price minus the trade-in value. A few states tax the full price, so confirm with your DMV or dealer.
What if my trade-in is worth less than my loan?
The difference is negative equity. It can be added to the new loan, which raises your payment and interest. Paying it in cash is cheaper.
How much is the monthly payment on a $32,000 car?
At 7% over 5 years, financing $33,500 costs about $663.34 a month with $6,300 in total interest. Change the inputs above to match your own quote.
Is a longer loan a good idea on $33,500?
A longer term lowers the payment but increases the total interest and keeps you owing money for longer, which raises the chance of owing more than the car is worth. Most lenders and consumer advocates suggest 60 months or less where the budget allows.
