How to calculate interest on a loan
This page explains how to calculate the interest on a loan, both the interest in any month and the total over the term, and the calculator below does it for you.
Amortization schedule
| Year | Principal | Interest | Balance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $3,647.21 | $931.99 | $8,352.79 |
| 2 | $3,989.35 | $589.85 | $4,363.44 |
| 3 | $4,363.44 | $215.64 | $0.00 |
Interest in one month and in total
Interest in a month equals the balance times the annual rate divided by 12. On $12,000 at 9% the first month’s interest is $12,000 × 0.0075 = $90. The payment on this loan is $381.60, so $291.60 reduces the balance.
Total interest is the sum of all months’ interest, or equivalently the payment times the number of months minus the amount borrowed: $381.60 × 36 − $12,000 = $1,737.60 (rounded).
Simple interest versus compound interest
On an amortizing installment loan, interest is charged only on the unpaid principal, so it is not compounded on interest already paid. On a credit card, unpaid interest is added to the balance, so interest compounds. That is why card debt grows faster than installment debt at the same rate.
$12,000 at 9% by loan length
Borrowing $12,000 at 9% over 3 years costs $381.60 a month and $1,737 in interest, $13,737 in total. Shorter terms raise the payment but cut the interest, and longer terms do the reverse. The table shows the trade-off across common terms.
| Term | Monthly payment | Total interest | Total paid |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12-month | $1,049.42 | $593 | $12,593 |
| 2-year | $548.22 | $1,157 | $13,157 |
| 3-year | $381.60 | $1,737 | $13,737 |
| 4-year | $298.62 | $2,334 | $14,334 |
| 5-year | $249.10 | $2,946 | $14,946 |
| 7-year | $193.07 | $4,218 | $16,218 |
| 10-year | $152.01 | $6,241 | $18,241 |
How your rate changes the cost
Personal loan rates vary widely with credit score, from the mid single digits for strong borrowers to 30% or more for weak credit. On $12,000 over 3 years, moving from 9% to 12% adds $611 in interest.
| APR | Monthly payment | Total interest |
|---|---|---|
| 6% | $365.06 | $1,142 |
| 7.5% | $373.27 | $1,438 |
| 9% | $381.60 | $1,737 |
| 10.5% | $390.03 | $2,041 |
| 12% | $398.57 | $2,349 |
Where the interest goes
In the first year of this $12,000 loan you pay $932 in interest, 20% of everything you pay that year. Interest is calculated on the balance each month, so it shrinks as you pay the loan down.
How much can you borrow for a given payment?
Working backwards at 9% over 3 years, here is the loan size each monthly payment supports.
| Monthly payment | Loan amount |
|---|---|
| $200/month | $6,289 |
| $300/month | $9,434 |
| $400/month | $12,579 |
| $500/month | $15,723 |
When is half of a $12,000 loan repaid?
With a $381.60 payment, the balance falls below half ($6,000) after 20 payments, about 1.7 years into a 3 years loan. Because interest is highest at the start, the second half of the loan is paid down much faster than the first.
| After | Balance left | Paid so far |
|---|---|---|
| 1 year | $8,353 | $4,579 |
| 2 years | $4,363 | $9,158 |
Frequently asked questions
How do I find total interest on a loan?
Multiply the monthly payment by the number of payments and subtract the amount borrowed.
Does interest change every month?
Yes. It is highest at the start and falls as the balance falls.
How is a loan payment calculated?
The payment is principal × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)^−n), where r is the monthly rate (APR ÷ 12) and n is the number of months. Each payment covers that month’s interest first, and the rest reduces the balance.
What is the difference between interest rate and APR?
The interest rate is the cost of borrowing the money. APR also includes certain fees, so it is the better number for comparing offers. This calculator treats the rate you enter as the rate that accrues on the balance.
